for the 2nd week in a row, jensy kicks first:
Monday, May 10th - Looking for work today. Not finding much. Yesterday was Kickball Week 4, and the debut of the Orangesleeves, whose ranks swelled to around 20 players at one point. Also, to the right, is Betsy the Kickball Nurse, who also made her debut this week, and, with her bandages and bottle of Jaegermeister, tended to many pulled muscles from those limping pussies, The Orphans (new link included!). Although, give 'em credit, their pitcher was very good at sharing the backpack-full of margarita (including "bite and suck" hose technology) he was wearing during the game. And, also give 'em credit, they beat us 4-0 in Game 1, even though we contend we are a much better-looking team. And we are. The Pirates were a no-show, presumably because this was their dodgeball week. But, instead we got a visit from a nice fellow named Jeff who writes for the New York Times, who was there to do a profile/article/something for the paper. Rumor has it we'll be in ink in two weeks. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, the Sleeves won their 2nd game, 9-5, over the non-Orangesleeves, evening our record to 1-1. We're better than the Mets!
Did i say we were good-looking?
The results for Week 4:
Game One - Orphans 4, Orangesleeves 0
Game Two - I have no idea, as i was getting margaritas
Game Three - Orphans beat OPEN team, score unknown
Game Four - Orangesleeves 9, OPEN 5
Game Five - Team i ended up on 6, Other team 5 (7 innings)
Week 4 Standings:
Los Piratas Mechanicos: 4 wins, 1 loss, 1 tie
Orphans: 3 wins, 1 loss
Orangesleeves: 1 win, 1 loss
Hasids: 1 win, 3 losses
Next week, the return of the Pirates? Another new team? And (confirmed) Betsy, the Kickball Nurse, leads stretches before the game. 6pm sharp, rain o' shine.
Kevin gets tough.
what can you say about one of our best-attended evenings, sporting greenpoint mayor jens's new, too-huge-of-a team, the orangesleeves, with the orphans in full kick, and gaining other newcomers, onlookers, and kickball sluts, while getting covered by yet a second major newspaper, the ny times? i guess i don't gotta.
to prove that the times will be our second major exposure, go to this linky on the voice's site, and scroll down a little. If you get a print copy, be sure to acknowledge a new poster child for kickball, B.A. She's featured in the contents page. The photographer, kate, came 2 weeks in a row, took god knows how many pictures (please send me copies!), and she picks our precious lushkitten to front our gig. i imagine the picture is priceless and i can't think of someone better than B.A. to represent.
jeff van damme from the times said his article will appear on sunday, may 23rd.
here are some good pictures from may 9th, mainly of the orangesleeves. you have have register real quick.
Issues: where to begin?
i must try to get the games a little better organized. there are so many people coming, and i want everyone to play enough. i think we're gonna have a few rounds of games, then have a losers' game, and finish with a winners' game. we have at least 4 teams showing up: the orphans, los piratos, and the orangesleeves have enough for 2. something needs to be done about that. between all them, and others randomly arriving, i got a lot of kids to please. so, remember to show good spirit and keep the games moving. invite people to join your team if it's light, and no team gets higher priority than a group of scrubs already assembled and ready to play.
The game must conform to some other fundamentals, and so this week, i am implementing the infield fly rule. though many have no clue of it, i must insist. to those that know the rule, you know kickball needs it, and should help me in making it official. someone dropping an infield pop-fly shouldn't benefit by getting the lead runner or a cheap double-play. if we have tagging up, then we have the infield fly rule. i ask now for volunteers to help we demonstrate it at the beginning of next week's games, and i need sound umpires to make it stick. To the Team Captains: spread the word and educate your players.
I will now say what the infield fly rule is, as i just cut, paste, and edit from Major Legue Baseball's website:
What the Fuck Is This Infield Fly Rule, and Why am I Putting Ill in Your Chill!?!!?
I am not ruining anyone's good time: rather, I am trying to make the game a little sounder. I ask everyone to accept the infield fly rule. I hope I get can reps from every team to help me demonstrate it at the beginning on Sunday, and to implement it with good umpiring from everyone. the infield fly rule is simply there to prevent infielders from intentionally dropping a fly ball, so they can't get a cheap double play, or easily put out the lead runner. furthermore, the runners shouldn't be penalized because someone dropped a pop-up. it's not fair if a runner's obliged to stay on the bag during a pop-up, then the fielder drops it. the runner has a low chance of advancing, and shouldn't be forced to leave the bag if someone didn't catch a pop-up. it makes the runner too easy an out.
this rule only applies with less than 2 outs, and with runners on first and second, or bases loaded.
On an Infield fly (NOTE: Not a Line Drive, just a POP-UP!), under those circumstances, the kicker is OUT. A fielder should always try to catch it, but if he doesn't, then the runners are not obliged to tag up. Yet the ball is live whether caught or not.
i took this part out. go to mlb.com to see their very lenghty and lacking explanation.
i dont want to make things too tricky or complcated, but I've understood this rule since 5th grade, so anyone can learn it now. It's FUN-damental. plus, good sports knowledge gets you laid everytime, and it's good not to be cheap. kickball shall not be a cheapdom. i hate cheap shit.
see ya sunday.
