Kickball Standings, For Your Amusement

The End of Sissy-Sallies, Bring on the Wally-Pallies.

While I don't like having too many rules, nor deliberating upon them, at least once a season, I must address them. I strive to prevent injuries, clarify some issues, and offer some enlightenment about the spirit of the league. Please understand my perception: mostly, the evenings are going fine, and people are enjoying themselves. Still, there's always a need for progress, especially in a dynamic league like this. I will cover three things, and please comment as to have a rich dialogue. I welcome any legitimate questions about rules here and now.

"Get it to the pitcher!!!" God, hearing that over and over can be embarrassing. Yes, the rule states that a play is over once the fielding team controls the ball on the mound. But that doesn't mean that the defense should wuss out and not try to make a doable play, and just relay the ball back to the mound, hoping the ump declares the runner wasn't halfway or something. In those situations, I give preference to the runners. Fielding is easier in kickball than baseball for two big reasons: one, there is an extra fielder, and two, pegging is allowed. Plus, smart fielders grasp fundamentals like good relays and backing up plays. So don't think veteran umps are gonna cow-tow to wussiness. Make a play.

Always avoid injury and collision. This is why we have double-bases at first and none of them are tied down. Still, I still see and feel explosions on first, even with two motherfucking bags. Should there be three? On a play to first, the white part is fair and for the fielder, while the orange is foul and the for the runner. If a player misuses first, the ump can award a call to the other player. For instance, if a runner just bowls into the first baseman, and the first baseman has his foot on the white, and his body is not in the plane of the baseline, then the runner could be called out. Conversely, if a fielder is unnecessarily blocking the basepath (such as not being near the ball), the runner could be ruled safe by interference. Fielders, please make way for the runners, with the exception of pop-flys and close plays at home. Even then, no fielder can be more than 3 feet off of the plate, or that could be deemed interference.

"No (fucking) bunting...The kicker's intent does not matter; neither do the mechanics of the kicker. Being able to chip it forcefully is just fine. What matters is the force (f=m*a) of the ball after it's been kicked. The ump may consider whether or not the fielding team can get the lead runner, or if the kicker can out-run the ball, but ultimately, the force of the ball is paramount in a bunt call." I wrote that rule, with the input of many people over 6 years. A bunt is like porn, you know it when you see it. Only one ump has the power to make that call, otherwise there'd be chaos.

Enjoy the Standings. Tourney weekend is comping up in a month, the weekend of July 11th!

great post kevin, i agree with everything written. I also believe with all the new teams and new players you should urge them to read up on their baseball rules. for example the specifics off what constitutes 'rounding first'
EXCEPTION: A batter-runner cannot be tagged out after overrunning or oversliding first base if he returns immediately to the base;

Base moved during play....
(j) He fails to return at once to first base after overrunning or oversliding that base. If he attempts to run to second he is out when tagged. If, after overrunning or oversliding first base he starts toward the dugout, or toward his position, and fails to return to first base at once, he is out, on appeal, when he or the base is tagged;
Rule 7.08(j) Comment: Runner who touches first base in overrunning and is declared safe by the umpire has, within the intent of Rule 4.09(a) “reached first base” and any run which scores on such a play counts, even though the runner subsequently becomes the third out for failure to return “at once,” as covered in Rule 7.08(j).
APPROVED RULING: (1) If the impact of a runner breaks a base loose from its position, no play can be made on that runner at that base if he had reached the base safely.
APPROVED RULING: (2) If a base is dislodged from its position during a play, any following runner on the same play shall be considered as touching or occupying the base if, in the umpire’s judgment, he touches or occupies the point marked by the dislodged bag.

as well as a 'put out runner continuing to round the bases.

(f) Any batter or runner who has just been put out hinders or impedes any following play being made on a runner. Such runner shall be declared out for the interference of his teammate; If the batter or a runner continues to advance after he has been put out, he shall not by that act alone be considered as confusing, hindering or impeding the fielders.

(g) If, in the judgment of the umpire, a base runner willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielder in the act of fielding a batted ball with the obvious intent to break up a double play, the ball is dead. The umpire shall call the runner out for interference and also call out the batter runner because of the action of his teammate. In no event may bases be run or runs scored because of such action by a runner.

Good points- I had a nasty (although purely accidental) collision at first a couple weeks ago and it can def shake you up. Although I must say considering the amount of alcohol consumed and how competitive the league can get- BKKB has a pretty decent injury record. Usually just 1 or 2 casts/hospital-needing injuries per year it's seemed to me...

The only thing I question is the first item. While we do allow pegging and have 10 feilders, that playground ball can't be thrown nearly as hard or fast as a baseball 9with the exception of a few gifted 3rd basemen across the league) and it makes throwing people out much more difficult. Add that to the possibilty of a dropped ball and its uually just safer to run it into the pitcher most of the time. Most of the runs in this league are scored on errors. Just my 2cents.
